Are MBA Administrators Bad for Churches?
Nov 7th, 2007 by Dan
I have known two churches now that have hired MBAs as their administrators. Both churches had horrible experiences with the MBAs not being able to work in a church environment. In one church, the MBA lasted less than a year, and in that year, was able to completely mess up every part of the job. In the other church, the MBA, even though a Christian, was so business like, that church lost its sense of Christian responsibility in its business practices, especially towards employees. My suspicion is that these churches hired poorly and that MBAs can really do a good job with church administration.

I just haven’t seen it. So, I am asking the honest question, are MBAs good or bad for churches? Click reply below and let me know about your experience with MBAs.
I think MBAs can and probably do function well in church administration. I say this because many pastors have previous lives in the secular world in various positions, and I don’t doubt there are probably some good pastors that have MBA degrees.
I think all of us need reminders of whose business we are going about when we do things in the name of the church. I think you can be good stewards of God’s gifts by being goal-driven without forgetting about grace. Good pastors have to strike this type of balance every day.
